MicroSociety develops the real life 21st century skills that all students need. The new Alberta Curriculum and the 10 competencies fit into the goals and objectives of MicroSociety. Students will be taught real life skills in the classroom and in their MicroSociety business ventures.
Idle Free Red Deer and Aspen Heights join forces.
In October of 2014 the City of Red Deer in partnership with Lafarge joined with Aspen Heights in implementing an idle free zone in front of the school. Signs have been posted to remind parents and guests about this very worthwhile environmntal initiative.
Community Service Learning Projects
The students and staff have enbarked on a
2 year project to incorporate Service Learning into the classroom and into our Microsociety Program. The grade 1's raised money and pet supplies for the SPCA. The grade 3's are developing a program to assist new students to our school with a care package.
The Helping Hearts Foundation is raising money to support local charities- Central Alberta Women's Shelter, The Red Deer and District Food Bank, and the Cancer Society.
MicroSociety Stock Exchange- MSX.
Students are being exposed to the the Stock Market through the use of our Micro-Stock Exchange. Students are able to buy and sell stocks/shares in the businesses in our MicroSociety program.
Classroom lessons are being taught to ensure our students are knowledgeable about the Stock Market and investing.
Breakfast for Learning
Through the generous support of the Breakfast for Learning progrm, Aspen Heights is able to provide a healthy breakfast for up to 40 students each day. MicroSociety student volunteers serve breakfast to their fellow MicroSociety citizens.
Health Action Team
The Health Action Team has been active the past two years encouraging the students and staff to lead and develop a healhty lifestyle. This team leads activities during assemblies, and is also responsible for develoing a healthy lunch bingo game in which all students are encouraged to bring healthy nutrious foods in their lunches.
